Feed Filter 2.0.0 is now available.
New in this version:
- Removed all features that hide ads or contact Facebook’s servers directly or indirectly. This was unfortunately necessary in order to keep from being shut down by Facebook. :-(
The following features have been removed:- Remove “Recent Activity” posts from your Wall
- Keep your Home page on the “Most Recent” News Feed
- Expand “SHOW SIMILAR POSTS”
- View all comments
- Load “Older Posts” until a certain number are shown
- Hide ads in the right sidebar, and all other ads
- Fixed hiding stories by type on Top News feed.
For more information on why these features had to be removed, please see the last few posts on this blog, about the Cease and Desist letter I received from Facebook’s lawyer — especially these two posts:

YAY! Facebook will remain usable thanks to your work! Thank you so much Russell, you are amazing!
2.0 is really a downgrade thanks to facebook…i wish i would of read what all it changed before i download it…if i did i would of stick to 1.4.5….stupid facebook for doing away with the Expand “SHOW SIMILAR POSTS” for games.
Glad you could work something out, the only feature i will really miss is show similar posts. But its still worth it just to have the apps hidden.
Sad, sad. FB won’t let us view things the way we would like, and they won’t let you do it for us. Removing “Recent Activity” and keeping the feed on “Most Recent” were so important to me. You were on the right track.
I downloaded version 2 3 days ago…Absolutely nothing change! what else can I do?? Sue
“Shut down” by Facebook? How? Is anything you’re doing with this add-on illegal? Sounds like they’re bluffing, hoping you won’t notice that they have no real power to tell people how they use their computers.
does not work anymore
Feed filter isn’t working.
Feed Filter works fine, but you need to take a look at the most recent 2 or 3 posts on this blog. If you’re still having problems after that, feel free to contact me and I’ll be glad to help.
Thanks,
Russell
will this stop posts that I make on friends status updates from appearing in other friends home feeds? I don’t want friend A knowing what I posted on friend B’s status. (or wall for that matter)
Sorry what i was meaning was the app filter feeds Cafe World etc etc.
The feeds where i collect things are showing other games in the same feed instead of filtering it to the specified game i.e. Cafe World, Mafia Wars & Country Life are all showing in the same feed where as before just the one would show.
Can we hide “xxx added NASCAR and NHRA to her interests.”?
I miss the following:
Keep Most Recent on top
Hiding Ads (duhhh)
Alien Heads: feel free to use the Contact page (link in the upper right of this page) to contact me directly and I’ll help you figure it out.
Mark: good suggestion, I’ll try to add it in the next version.
I like this addon, but it’s sad that almost every feature removed were the features that got me to download the addon in the first place. :(
I don’t mind, begrudgingly, having to show ads or even that I have to click Most Recent, but not having the ability to expand similar and filter posts will be sorely missed. Stupid Facebook.
thank you for mantaining the feed filter alive!
Now we’ll have to see all that crap in facebook, but it is still worth to use the filter.
great job
Thankfully I use FEBE and CLEO to backup my extensions and was able to revert back to Ver: 1.4.5.
I’m with Mark Jaquith on this and think FB have conned you.
Anyhow, FB should be ashamed of using stand-over tactics on you.
Jerome & Mark: Facebook is claiming more than just that I went against their terms of service. They’re claiming that the connections Feed Filter makes back to their server to do things like remove Recent Activity posts, or the clicks it does for you on “show similar posts” links that cause connections back to their server to load more posts, are unauthorized connections to their servers.
Features like these cause more connections to be made to their servers than if the user did the clicks themselves in the browser — or at least, the connections are being made more often. Whether or not we agree that it’s a problem, they do have the right to control which programs connect to their server (think about a DDoS attack, as an extreme example), so I believe they do have somewhat of a legal case, not just a case about terms of service.
Could they win? I have no idea, but I’m not prepared to fight them on it, so this is the best route I can go down at the moment. Sorry.
Thanks,
Russell
So glad you’re still around. I hate the ads but at least I can still hide the other junk. =-D
This is excellent. Love your tool, and the main reason I love it is for hiding all the useless crap I don’t want to see on my feed, so this is fantastic news. As far as ads go, I have an adblocker that deals with all of those anyway, so that won’t effect me. Glad to have you back! :)
I wondered about hiding ads…. I didn’t think FB would like that at all. :) I’m just glad Feed Filter is still around. The only things I really want it for is to hide those stupid who is friend with who stuff anyway.
I don’t use the app filter, I hide each app individually because when I’m on my Droid, I don’t have the filter, and I don’t want to see the apps there either. So I hide them individually.
I never used the remove recent activity from my wall anyway, so I don’t miss that.
Thanks for keeping the add on alive!
Thanks for the update; I’ll probably continue to use the older version rather than the new updated version because it has all the features that I like: removing recent activity, keeping my page on Most Recent news, expanding similar posts. I have other ways of hiding the ads. But at least you are able to continue working on this extension!
I love this tool and FB is pissing me off because I hate the similar posts. This tool got rid of that and now it’s back.
Removing ’show similar posts’ was bad move :| I know so many people who play games on FB and they needed that option, including myself. Now I don’t really need your add-on, the most important thing for me is gone. It was a very short pleasure to have filter feed with me :S
I wish I knew how to get back to ver: 1.4.5 I hate this new version.
well it was a nice program, but the feature I wanted it for was to expand similar posts only, for the games I play on there, if I would have known that this was a rollback I never would have updated it.
Does it have any legal effect on you if it still gets used, as I have it on a second computer not updated yet ?
Russell.
My “view similar posts” does not expand anymore, is there a fix for it?
Feed filter is not working for “show similar posts” anymore :( that is why i have it. Please help
If people are annoyed at the ads then simply install adblock. The adblocking feature of Feed Filter was redundant for me anyway and I think FFixer keeps most of the rest of the functionality although I wonder how long it will be before they get shut down.
The app was great. FB has to destroy all helpers. The problem now is I have to expand older posts it doesn’t.
Tamn it! i am a constant player in facebook. and not i have to expand the posts manually….i hate it…i hope i can change back to the old version again somehow. :( damn it! this is very bad.
GRRRRR…How do I get the older version back????? that’s the ONLY reason I installed FeedFilter….to have the “show similar posts” go away….now they are all grouped together again and I HATE IT!!!
ACK!! If I had any idea that this update would remove the features I love the most I would have stayed with the older version. I detest the fact that “recent activity” not only clogs up my page, but that FB continually reposts them all once I manually delete them. They are very sneaky about this and they also intersperse them among older posts.
Any way to get the last version still?
Thanks for all you’ve done.
I was glad to be able to hide the ads, but I was good at ignoring them anyhow, so that part doesn’t really matter to me. I don’t see why the “Most Recent” option bothers anybody. It should be the default choice anyhow. I actually liked the “Status Updates” feed the best, anyhow. Any chance it could be added as an option? Other than that, the rest of the changes don’t really bother me.
With the new changes you did to Feed Filter 2.0 Makes it completely worthless to me now… time to find an old copy of it.
Thanks for making FaceBook happy, your Users are unhappy now.
This is so typical of facebook rendering useless again.
unfortunately, your update mandated by facebook just made the application useless to me.
Russell, I really do appreciate your time and work you are putting into this, and I’m sure I’m not the only one, but my question repeats many others… can we get the old version back or is it gone forever?
There are some great options in your add-on, but I think the main reason people were using FF is to expand ’show similar posts’. So how can we get this back?
doesnt work anymore
Wished I’d stayed with the older version! Didn’t realise things had been removed until it was too late, just automatically installed new version!
Well, those downgrades turned the feed filter into a dinosaur. I’ve left my email. If there’s a way to go back, let me know. For now I’m unstalling the filter. It has no use that I can see. It’s just clutter now. So sad FB did a power play on ya. It sucks :(
Well now you need to post the UNINSTALL link. Remove recent activity and show similar posts was the only reason I installed FF to begin with. Facebook has enough angry users for changing gaming posts I’m surprised they fought ya on this one. If you can somehow restore the link to version 1.4.5 I’ll happily go back to my ignorance of any FB charges. I think I haven’t downloaded this new one on my home computer — and if so, I certainly won’t now. If Feed Filter dies, so be it. Sorry you had the hassle cuz you were the only thing that freed us from hassle. Fun while it lasted. If you develop a new one that can use all those useful tools, let us know.
AWWW CRAP.. 2 reasons why I installed feed filter 1 hide who is friends with who. ,,, that is a huge waste of space 99 percent of fb user dont care who is now friends with who and who now is on a new app… DONT CARE. this gets in the way of what we are really doing … and that is trying to complete tasks for the apps we are using.
The second reason which seems to the biggest issue for most of us and since they started using this similar grouping they have also included duplication of posts … another waste of space and time. Expanding the similar groupings and removing duplication is the reason we(me and many others) went looking for some help and now that feature is removed … I have 1 word.. DAMMIT.. now I will have to look else where.
I get and understand the ADs no worries there and Thanks for all the work you have done..
Ya know i just wanna say that this really suck’s.. it just seems like what my mamma used to say that facebook is gettin to big for there britches.. an thanks to russ an his hard work.. an i hope he can come up withe a better programs that will agree with facebook
i wish that i had known this was in the update before i downloaded it …
why even have the software now?
The only reason I had this filter was to remove my recent activity. It’s pretty useless now.
Why is it that when you click to see older posts it just gives us duplicates of what we already see, it does NOT go any further so to even use the game filters with this feed filter is useless also.
I installed this new version but I want the ‘Remove “Recent Activity” posts from your Wall’ feature bacK!!
I learned a valuable lesson today. There is a difference between updating and upgrading. I should have done my homework and read the change log before “updating”. Shame on me. I was using FF in conjunction with another add-on so, thankfully, I still don’t have to worry about the ads. But what made FF valuable to me was the auto-removal of recent activity. The other features were merely a bonus.
I do understand your legal plight and I wonder if you have considered allowing users to access disabled features from the former version directly (outside of the Add-ons for Firefox website) or to add the features through a grease monkey script. If users are adding functionality to Firefox individually, Facebook would have to chase down many instead of one. That should address the liability concern.
Also, so I don’t appear to be entirely sour on the “new” version, I think you’re onto something with the feed highlighting feature. Can you bifurcate it so that we can choose to hide some features and still highlight others (instead of “either or”)? And adding more color options to allow for grouping would be nice visual touch. Sorry to hear about the manhunt, but that only mean you were doing something right. Thanks!
The post on FB are not expanding anymore with this tool.
Okay, I installed it. But how do you use it? I see no difference to my FB. Is there controls? Or is it an automatic thing? Sorry to be so dumb.
Thanks x
I accidentally removed 1.45 in an add-on cull (didn’t realise what it was). I re-installed and got 2.0
Is there any way to recover 1.45?
I(f you don’t want to post here, feel free to email me : janglymark AT yahoo DOT co DOT uk
I liked the features you removed. That’s why i got the feed filter in the first place. I uninstalled it because you all removed it.
Hi Russell, 2.0.0 is hiding all my posts and comments on groups and not showing me recent posts by others.
Has fb caught up with 2.0.0?
Hi Russell sorry this has happened!!! My Question is can I not get the game feeds now on one page anymore? That is the main feature most of us want so bad!!!!!
sadly i only downloaded to remove recent activity, sadly this has gone :( sad, sad, sad. facebook is becoming even more evil than it was. thanks for your hard work though. i am going to remove application as i have no further use for it.
Argh! Grrr! Now firefox runs so slowly it’s driving me nuts! Every page I click on in facebook takes about two minutes to load. My poor hard drive is being worked too hard. Is there a way to fix this?
Would it be better to uninstall firefox since the upgrade may still have the old facebook filters there? Is there a comparability issue? I am so NOT computer savvy. Please help! :)
Now I don’t need this app any more. The only reason I used it was for removing recent activity. #!@$# facebook!
Oh wot a bummer man i really liked ur add on before fb wrecked it im a FV addict and really found the expand similar posts really useful, arrrg dont know why they put that crap on in the first place!! Thanks anyway for your efforts but really wish i didnt upgrade :-(
“Remove “Recent Activity” posts from your Wall” was the only reason i used this program. thanks facebook. i am deleting this add-on. let me know if you can reset this. i NEVER would have updated if i knew this would happen. now how do i find a version of 1.4.5??????
Well that defeats the purpose of me even using your tool. The show similar posts was what I wanted it for. Is there a way to get the older version back onto my system? Otherwise, I’m just deleting it. :(
