Multiplayer client development

I would like to learn about (and actually write) my own client, but can find no references at all about how to do this on the FSX side.Do clients work by creating unmanaged AI aircraft? Can everything be managed through SimConnect? How can I control the sounds and effects shown? (gear down, flaps, engine start, etc)

Do you have any information that can help me?
