Hi all.
I have 2002, my friend 2004. We both have Ver3.0 FSHost' and both have directx 9. I have 2002 and 2004 ticked in the Options box. I can join his Host in 2002 and he mine. But when I host (2002), he tries to join with 2004, has the IP, searches and finds my session, clicks join but then his game locks up!!! This happens each time he tries to connect to me.
Any ideas, please ???

Hi Tony, sorry to hear about the problem.

When it locks up, does it lockup forever, or does it just stay frozen for about a minute, and then say it couldn't connect?  If it eventually comes back, that's most likely a connection issue, and not all of the data is making it between your two machines.

Do either of you have a network at home, or a router?  Maybe a firewall?

Hi Russell

Thanks for the reply, I could not honestly say at this moment in time whether he locks permanent or not. I will find out and let you know.

Thanks for your time.

Further to last post...... forgot to mention... No routers, Network, etc. Both plain old 56k modem comps. My friend does understand about  changing the ports, etc. Do I have to do this with my 2002 setup? It is strange how when he hosts every thing is great. It all works great when he uses 2002 instead of 2004 ??? The obvious answer is ...why don't you let him host all the time. The problem is I am trying to help some new guys to the hobby and they have 2004 but are not into d/loading yet, although I have pointed them in the direction of FSHost, it is above them at this time!!!
Will get other info,

Kind regards,

Tony

 Hello again, Russell.

We have tried to connect again and the 2004 locked, but after about two minutes a connection message appeared. I am going to dump Host and re-install to see if something has been corrupted during the download.

Will be in touch tommorrow (Monday) UK time 7.30pm

Hi Tony,

It sounds like you're doing things correctly.  Usually you shouldn't have to deal with any port settings, since you're not using a router or a network.  Do either of you have a firewall running?  Including the built-in XP firewall, if you're running XP?

The only thing I can think of is that maybe the ports are being blocked somehow by your (or his) ISP.  In your FSHost, you might try changing the FS2004 Host Port to some other number such as 23455, or even 1000 or 80, just to see if it makes a difference.  You'll have to stop the servers in FSHost before it'll let you change the setting.  Also, the person connecting to you should change their Connect port also.  In the multiplayer screen, click the Client Settings button, and change the Connect port to match what you're using in FSHost.

Thanks for reply, Russell,

No, there are no firewalls in operation. My port shows as 80, so changed it to 81, but no joy. Will try your other suggestions, and keep you posted on any reaction (or not)

Thanks for your time.

Actually, the port 80 is the Remote Access port, which is used for the web pages.  The port I'm referring to is the FS2004 Host Port, which defaults to 23456.  You'll find it on the Options / Session page.  I'm wondering if changing that to a different port might help, since you said FS2004 isn't able to connect to the session.

Hello there Russell,

Sorry long time in replying. After all our troubles with 2002, I have now installed another H/D and installed FS9. Believe it or not, other players still can't connect to me.  Fs2002 to Fs2002 no prob either way. Me with 2002 or 2004 joining anyone else....no prob. but no one can join me with 2004. Now, is it possible for 2004 to join 2004 WITHOUT FsHost??. They cannot join me. I have not tried joining someone else without Host. If i can join them, then there is a problem with this computer. Technical I mean. We have done every permutation with ports. This is now getting me so down, I am thinking 'new Comp'!!. By the way, I have no firewalls and only an AVG virus checker which I have closed. Funny thing is I can join anybody. I am running Windows 98.
Any suggestions!!!!

Tony C.

Ps. If the suggestion is new comp, I will let you know who to mqke the cheque out to ;D ;D ;D

Hi Tony, sorry to hear you still have the same problem.

Were you able to try my suggestion of changing the FS2004 host port?  The one that defaults to 23456?  See the previous couple of posts above.

Hello again, Russell

Thanks for all your time, I know the solution is going to be a ridiculous issue, but it will not beat me!!!!! We have tried the port numbers, etc I have just reloaded, installed on a different drive, try anything once!! Just going to eliminate bit by bit.

Again, thanks for your trouble, but just remember, there are thousands of users with no problems, and we all appreciate what you do.

Regards,

Tony.

Will keep you posted. If something strange does turn up, it may help you to help others.

Hiya, Russell,

Latest update......I think we have eliminated Fs Host from any of the problems encountered. We have done all the permutations now, and the one thing that has surfaced is this........Under 'Log' in Host, 'show players directx' is ticked, I do not show under DX. My friend shows as 9. So we reversed so he hosted and I joined him, but again, I did not show. He showed as 9. I therefore d/l Directx 9.0b and installed again, but the DX still shows blank!!! I have run dxdiag and it shows no probs. We have narrowed it down, but from here I draw a blank......which way next, mate??
I await with baited breath!!!

Further to last post, I think I will try connecting on Fs2002 to see if I registar as 9 under Log.

Yeah, the FS2004 side of FSHost doesn't show DirectX version info -- it's not available to me from DirectPlay.  So it'll only show the version of players connecting with FS2002.

Hi Russell

I don't expect you remember the problems I had with Host connections, because time has gone by, but I have now built a new computer 8) and EVERYTHING IS RUNNING GREAT, in fact so great that my friend joined before I had time to!!!!! Thanks for all the time you spent in trying to sort my problems.

Tony
PS...Pushing FS Host to anyone I can. Thanks for your dedication. I wish I had your brain!!!!
